This rain and fog is fine. I picked April. With its showers and whatnot. And it absolutely creates some cool foggy windswept views. But… *sigh*
Anywho, I packed up and left Cardiff this morning and headed north to Manchester. LOL no, I mean, I ended up in Manchester, but I – of course – got there by going west first. Travelling along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, a road that winds its way all along the southwestern edge of Wales and through coastal town after coastal town.
Beachfront Property
Speaking of. I feel weird taking pics of coastal towns? Like, I’d have to stop the car somewhere within view of a local and get out the camera and be like… HI I PROMISE TO BLUR YOUR FACE SORRY SORRY. But these towns are so cute and wee and I love them a lot. And today I lucked out. For the first time on this trip (that I’ve noticed), as I was winding down the coastal path, there was a side-strip Parking area on a hill descending into a tiny coastal town. At just the right distance to take a creeper pic without feeling creepy \o/
Hello, Newgale. You’re lovely.
No But Seriously, What Does That To Rock?
The last stop on the coastal path before heading northeast through Wales up to Manchester was the best stop of the day. I reached it via the second-narrowest road I’ve taken and I’m not sure it’s really meant for non-locals? But there’s usually a Private/Local-Access sign? Whatever, it was great so, sorry not sorry.
The road wound down to a point where I could stop and see the various… they’re not fjords like Norway, but they’re the rocky inlets and hills that drop into the ocean on the coast. And again, like a few days ago, they’re made of rocks that are jutting up at a severe angle from the ocean. I still need to understand what kind of geologic process causes that. It’s SO COOL.
El Barto Was Here
The funniest discovery of the day was purely by accident while pulled over at a rest stop. Someone – presumably some Welsh youth – had tagged the back of a highway sign with “CYMRU” which is Welsh for “Wales” which… that’s hilarious. Like, are there kids back in the US tagging signs like “VERMONT”?
Dracarys
No, wait, the funniest moment was probably when I rounded a corner on the final leg of today’s drive and encountered this beast flying at me through the air:
Cameras suck and make things appear to be farther away than they are to the naked eye, so let me tell you, this was shockingly large looming over the road. And it took a full 15 seconds for my brain to switch back on and realize that, no, that’s not Daenerys swooping over Wales on a DRAGON, but rather the two top fins on a dormant wind turbine.
