Day 21: To Belfast via Cairnryan Ferry

There’s not much to say about today. I drove from Edinburgh to Belfast, Northern Ireland. I got to drive the car onto a ferry in Cairnryan and take a little nap in a cruise boat cabin to make up for getting up so early.

Volcanic Plug

As you drive down the hillside into Turnberry (where the highway hangs a sharp left southward and I really hope that’s why the town is called Turnberry), you can’t help but stop and stare at this odd little knob of an island that suddenly appears. It’s weird. I don’t know why, it just seems odd? Maybe it’s the steep cliffs before any vegetation appear? It’s called Ailsa Craig and it’s apparently the leftover hardened magma from an ancient volcano which is called a volcanic plug. Adorable.

Even more adorable? It’s made of blue hone granite that they make curling stones out of *frantically sweeps the beach in front of the island*
